How do I start using Focusly?+

After downloading, look for the timer icon in your menu bar (top-right). Click it to open the app and start your first focus session! You can customize your timer duration, enable/disable sounds, and explore all the features from there.

Does Focusly work offline?+

Yes! Focusly works 100% offline. All features are available without an internet connection. Your data stays on your device, and you never need to worry about connectivity.

Is my data private?+

Absolutely! All data is stored locally on your Mac. We don't have servers, we don't track you, and your calendar data never leaves your device. See our Privacy Policy for more details.

Can I use it without calendar access?+

Yes! Calendar integration is completely optional. All core features—timers, tasks, notes, statistics—work perfectly without calendar access. You only need to grant calendar permissions if you want meeting notifications and focus time suggestions.

Click the Focusly icon in your menu bar, then click the settings icon (⚙️). From there you can adjust focus duration, break length, notification preferences, sound effects, and more. All changes are saved automatically.

Can I export my data?+

Yes! Focusly stores all data locally on your Mac. You can find your data in ~/Library/Application Support/Focusly/. Your tasks, sessions, and statistics are stored in standard formats that you can backup or export manually.

How do I use timer presets?+

Timer presets let you save your favorite time configurations. To create a preset:

  1. Set your desired focus time, short break, and long break durations
  2. Click the "Save as Preset" button (⭐)
  3. Give it a name (e.g., "Deep Work", "Quick Tasks")
  4. Access your presets from the dropdown menu anytime

Popular presets:

  • Classic: 25min focus / 5min break
  • Deep Work: 90min focus / 15min break
  • Quick Tasks: 15min focus / 3min break
  • Study Session: 50min focus / 10min break
Can I link tasks to focus sessions?+

Yes! When you start a timer, you can select which task you're working on. This helps you:

  • Track time spent per task
  • See how many Pomodoros each task took
  • Build a history of your work patterns
  • Get accurate productivity insights

Simply click "Link Task" when starting a timer, or select from your existing tasks. You can also work without linking tasks—it's completely optional.

How does calendar integration work?+

Focusly syncs with your macOS Calendar to help you stay on schedule:

  • Meeting Alerts: Get notified before meetings during focus sessions
  • Smart Scheduling: See available time blocks for deep work
  • Conflict Detection: Timer warns you if you might run into a meeting
  • Privacy First: All data stays on your device

To enable: Go to Settings → Calendar → Grant Permission. You can revoke access anytime in System Preferences.

What statistics does Focusly track?+

Focusly tracks your productivity with:

  • Total Focus Time: Daily, weekly, and monthly totals
  • Sessions Completed: Number of Pomodoros finished
  • Current Streak: Consecutive days of focused work
  • Longest Streak: Your personal best
  • Peak Hours: When you're most productive
  • Task Completion: Tasks done vs. created
  • Average Session: Your typical focus duration
  • Calendar Heatmap: Visual overview of your year

All stats update automatically and are displayed in beautiful charts in the Statistics tab.

How do I use the journal feature?+

The journal helps you reflect on your work and track learnings:

  • Session Notes: Jot down what you accomplished after each focus session
  • Daily Entries: Create standalone journal entries for planning or reflection
  • Search History: Find past notes instantly
  • Tags & Categories: Organize entries by project or theme

Access your journal from the Journal tab (⌘ + J) and start building a timeline of your productive work!

Can I customize notification sounds?+

Yes! Focusly includes multiple notification sounds and full customization:

  • Built-in Sounds: Bell, Chime, Gentle, Focus, Complete
  • Volume Control: Adjust notification volume independently
  • Custom Sounds: Add your own sound files (.mp3, .wav)
  • Separate Alerts: Different sounds for start, break, and end
  • Silent Mode: Visual-only notifications

Configure all sound preferences in Settings → Notifications.

Is there a Windows or Linux version?+

Currently, Focusly is macOS-only. However, since it's open source, the community can potentially port it to other platforms. Follow our GitHub repository for updates!
